Background of the Study
Arms smuggling has emerged as a critical security challenge in many parts of northern Nigeria, particularly in states like Yobe, where insurgent activities, banditry, and intergroup violence have escalated in recent years. Nguru, a town in Yobe State, has witnessed a rise in insecurity, attributed in part to the illegal flow of arms across borders and through local networks. The availability of small arms and light weapons in the hands of non-state actors has exacerbated violent conflicts, including insurgent attacks, armed robberies, and clashes between rival groups.
Arms smuggling, often facilitated by porous borders and weak enforcement mechanisms, has contributed to the escalation of violence and instability in Nguru, leading to increased loss of lives, displacement of people, and a general atmosphere of fear. This study will examine how arms smuggling in Nguru has impacted the security situation, contributing to the growing levels of violence and insecurity in the region, and propose measures to address this issue through enhanced security frameworks and border control initiatives.
Statement of the Problem
The increasing smuggling of arms into Nguru has played a major role in perpetuating insecurity and violence in the region. While various government agencies have taken steps to combat illegal arms trafficking, the problem persists, leading to an escalating cycle of violence. Despite the importance of addressing arms smuggling to reduce insecurity, little research has been conducted on its specific impact in Nguru and surrounding areas. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between arms smuggling and insecurity in Nguru and assess the effectiveness of existing measures to combat arms trafficking.
